The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has dismissed rumors that its 2023 presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and other members are planning to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
State Chairman Hashimu Dungurawa described the speculation as unfounded, stating that the NNPP has no intention of joining the APC, which he accused of failing Nigerians.
“We don’t have that interest or intention, and we see them as enemies of democracy,” Dungurawa said. “Look at where they have led the country today. People are waiting for the next election to teach them a lesson.”
He cited declining APC votes in past elections as proof of the party’s dwindling popularity, noting that the ruling party’s support had dropped from nearly 20 million votes in 2015 to 8 million in 2023.
The NNPP chairman’s remarks came in response to comments by Kano APC Chairman Abdullahi Abbas, who had earlier described Kwankwaso’s speculated defection as a “welcome development” but set conditions for such a move.
Dungurawa reaffirmed NNPP’s commitment to providing an alternative to the APC, insisting that Nigerians were eager for a change in leadership.
