The Ondo State Police Command has refuted reports alleging that a vehicle in First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s convoy caused the death of a child in Akure on Thursday.
In a statement, Police Spokesperson DSP Olufunmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya described a Sahara Reporters publication as “false and misleading,” clarifying that the fatal incident involved an unregistered white Lexus in a hit-and-run case at Oba-Ile area, unrelated to the First Lady’s visit.
“The First Lady was in Ondo to launch the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme and distribute medical kits to midwives. At no point was her convoy involved in this tragedy,” the statement emphasized.
Police investigations revealed that:
- An eyewitness pursued the fleeing Lexus on motorcycle after the crash
- The victim’s parents confirmed their child was 7 years old, not 9 as erroneously reported
- Ondo CP has visited the bereaved family and pledged thorough investigation
The First Lady had been in Akure for a healthcare initiative distributing 10,000 professional kits to South-West midwives when the unrelated accident occurred. Authorities have urged media outlets to verify sensitive reports before publication.
