Brazilian superstar Neymar Jr. has endured another injury setback, being substituted just 34 minutes into his long-awaited return for Santos in the Brasileirão. The 33-year-old, who recently rejoined his boyhood club, was forced off the pitch in what marks the latest chapter in his ongoing fitness struggles.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the incident, stating: “Neymar Jr. leaves the pitch with a new injury as Santos started him tonight in the Brasileirão. After 34 minutes, Neymar has been subbed off.”
This latest setback follows a turbulent period for the forward, who mutually terminated his contract with Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in January 2025 after an injury-plagued stint. Signed for a reported $104 million per year in 2023, Neymar managed just seven appearances for Al-Hilal before a cruciate ligament rupture in October 2023 derailed his Saudi Pro League career.
Al-Hilal coach Jorge Jesus had earlier remarked on Neymar’s struggles, saying, “He can no longer play at the level we are used to. Things have become difficult for him, unfortunately.”
Despite his recent woes, Neymar remains determined to feature in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, calling it his “last shot” at glory. His return to Santos was seen as a potential revival, but this latest injury casts doubt over his ability to regain peak form.
Once considered the heir to Pelé, Neymar’s career has been marred by recurring injuries since his record-breaking €220 million move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017. Now, fans and pundits alike await updates on his condition, hoping the Brazilian icon can overcome yet another setback.
