Following the disruption of the Rangers vs Enyimba match in Enugu, Nigeria, on Sunday, June 9, 2024, Enyimba supporters have defended their actions, attributing the chaos to harassment by Rangers fans.
The match, crucial for league standings, ended prematurely after Enyimba fans stormed the pitch in protest of a late penalty awarded to Rangers.
Returning to Umuahia, Enyimba fans, including Nnanna Iwundu and Jeff Ezute, claimed they were provoked by continuous harassment from Rangers supporters during the game. They alleged the penalty call was biased, intended to ensure a Rangers victory. Jeff Ezute stated, “The crisis started while the match was ongoing; we were harassed throughout.”
Another fan, Okoro David Amah, clarified that they were merely joining their team after it left the field. Clinton Uba, a media figure, urged the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) to investigate thoroughly.
In contrast, Rangers fans have demanded penalties for Enyimba’s withdrawal from the match and their fans’ behavior. The NFF and NPFL are expected to review the incident and provide a resolution.
