Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee has vehemently defended under-fire goalkeeper André Onana after the Cameroonian’s two critical mistakes cost the Red Devils victory in their Europa League quarter-final first leg against Lyon.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper endured a nightmare evening at Groupama Stadium, misjudging Thiago Almada’s 34th-minute free-kick before fumbling Georges Mikautadze’s shot into Rayan Cherki’s path for Lyon’s 93rd-minute equalizer in the 2-2 draw. These errors came days after Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic – a former United player – labeled Onana “one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United’s history.”

Zirkzee, who came off the bench to score United’s 88th-minute go-ahead goal, dismissed the growing criticism: “We’re one team, so we’re not going to take someone out for making mistakes. That’s ridiculous,” the Dutch forward stated. “The manager said it perfectly – when one player makes a mistake, the whole team makes a mistake.”

Manager Rúben Amorim maintained public support for Onana post-match, but the goalkeeper’s confidence crisis threatens to derail United’s last remaining shot at silverware this season. With the Premier League title race long gone, the Europa League represents United’s sole opportunity to salvage a disappointing campaign.

“We have to win it, we all know that,” Zirkzee admitted. “There’s no way around that. It’s the only thing we have to do.” The striker remained optimistic about next week’s Old Trafford decider, noting the home crowd could prove decisive: “With the full support of the stadium, it’s going to be difficult for them and easier for us.”

As United prepare for a crucial Premier League clash at Newcastle this Sunday, all eyes will be on whether Amorim keeps faith with Onana or turns to backup Altay Bayındır. The Turkish keeper has made just two appearances since his summer move from Fenerbahçe.

Former United defender Gary Neville weighed in on social media: “Every goalkeeper has these periods. What matters is how Onana responds. The dressing room’s support is crucial.” With the season hanging in the balance, United’s squad unity faces its sternest test yet.
