Plans are finalized for the burial of the late Nollywood actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu. The ceremony is scheduled for June 28, 2024, in his hometown of Amuri, Nkanu West Local Government Area, Enugu State, Nigeria.

In preparation, the Central Planning Committee and notable friends and family members have refuted claims of soliciting funds for the burial, dismissing them as attempts to demean Okafor’s family. Monday Diamond Ani, Chairman of the Committee, clarified in a statement on Monday, June 10, 2024, that the allegations were “manipulative, malicious, and fabricated by an evil gang against Mr. Ibu, even while he was sick and after his death.”

Ani emphasized the committee’s extensive preparations despite the substantial medical expenses Okafor incurred. Activities include a tribute performance, a documentary on his life, and a novelty match. Ani highlighted, “The night of tribute on June 26 will be preceded by a novelty match on June 25 between celebrities and Rangers International Football Club at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.”

Expected attendees for the tribute performance include notable artists such as Rudeboy, Flavour, Akpororo, and Chinyere Udoma, and star appearances by Chief Pete Edochie, Patience Ozokwor (Mama G), Osita Iheme (Paw Paw), among others.

Ani also addressed the customary nature of fund-raising for burials in Igbo culture, noting, “It is a fact that a fund is being raised to support the burial of Mr. Ibu, which is customary in Igbo land. Well-wishers contribute funds and other resources, such as live cows and logistical help, to support the burial.”

He expressed gratitude to the Enugu State Government and individuals for their support in providing accommodations, security, mobility, and some funds, and warned detractors against tarnishing Mr. Ibu’s legacy.

“The handwork of some miscreants, enemies of progress who must have wished for Mr. Ibu’s death and are perhaps happy that Mr. Ibu is no more… wanted to use this medium to tarnish the name of Mr. Ibu and the Okafor family in general,” He said.
