The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Bayelsa State Command, has dismissed reports alleging the unlawful detention of 15 domestic staff of former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan, at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Okaka.
In a statement by ASC I G.T. Isari, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, the NCoS described the claims as false and misleading, emphasizing that the inmates were legally remanded and are undergoing trial.
The statement clarified that the individuals were brought into custody under a valid court order and have been attending scheduled court hearings, including sessions on March 10, 11, and April 3, 2025, with the next hearing set for April 17.
“The inmates have been treated fairly, with their fundamental rights fully respected,” Isari stated. He further stressed that no detainee is admitted without proper legal documentation, countering allegations of arbitrary detention.
The NCoS also denied claims of a secret meeting between Dame Patience Jonathan and correctional officials, labeling such reports as baseless attempts to discredit the Service.
Reaffirming its commitment to lawful and humane custody, the NCoS assured the public of its adherence to due process under the leadership of Acting Controller General Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche.
The Service urged the public to disregard the misinformation, maintaining that the Okaka facility remains well-managed and conflict-free.
