United States President Donald Trump has announced a 75-day extension for ByteDance to finalize the sale of TikTok’s U.S. operations, allowing the popular video-sharing app to continue running during ongoing negotiations.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, “My Administration has been working very hard on a Deal to SAVE TIKTOK, and we have made tremendous progress.” He said the extension is necessary to allow time for the completion of legal and regulatory approvals.
“The Deal requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed, which is why I am signing an Executive Order to keep TikTok up and running for an additional 75 days,” he wrote.
The decision comes amid continued tensions between the U.S. and China, particularly regarding trade relations. Trump noted, “We hope to continue working in Good Faith with China, who I understand are not very happy about our Reciprocal Tariffs (Necessary for Fair and Balanced Trade between China and the U.S.A.!).”
Trump emphasized the effectiveness of economic measures like tariffs, saying, “This proves that Tariffs are the most powerful Economic tool, and very important to our National Security!”
Reaffirming his administration’s stance on the importance of TikTok to American users, Trump declared, “We do not want TikTok to ‘go dark.’” He expressed optimism that a favorable agreement could soon be reached.
“We look forward to working with TikTok and China to close the Deal. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” he concluded.
The announcement follows reports that retail giant Walmart is exploring a potential acquisition of TikTok in collaboration with other investors, though no official deal has been confirmed.
