The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially declared Sunday, March 30, 2025, as Eid-el-Fitr following the sighting of the new moon in Nigeria.
The announcement was made on Saturday after reports from National Moon Sighting Committees and various Islamic leaders across the country confirmed the sighting of the crescent marking the beginning of the Islamic month of Shawwal.
The Sultan stated, “Today, March 29, 2025 (29th Ramadan 1446AH), we have received credible reports from Muslim leaders and organizations, including the Shehu of Borno, the Emir of Dutse, the Emir of Argungu, the Emir of Mubi, the Emir of Daura, and the Emir of Zazzau, confirming the sighting of the new moon.”
Following this confirmation, he declared Sunday, March 30, 2025, as the first day of Shawwal and the official date for Eid-el-Fitr celebrations in Nigeria.
Earlier, Saudi Arabia had also confirmed the sighting of the moon, announcing that Eid-el-Fitr would be observed on Sunday.
Eid-el-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayers, and spiritual reflection observed by millions of Muslims worldwide. The festival is typically celebrated with special prayers, feasting, and acts of charity.
