In a decisive operation, troops from Operation UDO KA neutralized six terrorists affiliated with the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during a raid in Igboro Forest, Arochukwu Local Government Area, on Saturday. This action comes in response to a recent attack on military personnel in Aba.
The Nigerian Army, through its official X handle, confirmed the operation aimed at apprehending the perpetrators of last week’s ambush, which resulted in the deaths of six soldiers. According to the army, troops encountered improvised explosive devices during the raid, leading to a minor injury for one soldier. Despite this, the soldiers managed to overcome the terrorists with superior firepower, leading to the deaths of six militants, while others escaped with gunshot wounds.
Recovered from the raid were locally fabricated rocket-propelled grenade launchers, artillery guns, dane guns, and Biafran flags. The troops also destroyed the militants’ camps and vehicles.
The army has urged the residents of Abia State to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely information to help eradicate the criminal elements.
This operation follows a deadly confrontation at Obikabia Junction Checkpoint in Obingwa Local Government Area last week, where six soldiers and six civilians were killed. The attackers used SUVs and took advantage of the surrounding terrain to launch their assault.
Major General Edward Buba, a military spokesperson, emphasized the need for a robust military response to such attacks, highlighting the critical role of civilian support in combating terrorism. “The armed forces mourn the loss of our soldiers and are committed to bringing overwhelming pressure to ensure the total defeat of these terrorist groups,” Buba stated. The raid underscores the military’s commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region amidst ongoing challenges posed by IPOB/ESN militants.
