The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has seized 175,000 bottles of codeine-based syrup imported from India, marking a significant operation barely a week after a similar confiscation in Port Harcourt.

In a statement on Sunday, NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi revealed that the latest consignment, weighing 26,250 kg and stored in 875 cartons, was intercepted during a joint examination at the Port Harcourt Ports Complex on June 7, 2024. The shipment, en route to the C to C bonded terminal in Enugu, was flagged following intelligence that prompted a comprehensive examination by NDLEA and Customs officials.

The seizure is part of a broader crackdown on illicit drugs, including additional interceptions of drug consignments disguised as clothing and synthetic hair, destined for the U.S. and U.K., and arrests in various states involving substantial quantities of tramadol, diazepam, cannabis, and other narcotics.

NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd.) commended the agency’s personnel for their diligence in these operations. He highlighted their critical role in curbing the supply of illegal drugs and encouraged continued vigilance to maintain the momentum in drug enforcement efforts.
