Nigerian authorities have successfully rescued 10 teenage girls, aged between 15 and 16, from the horrors of human trafficking and forced prostitution in Ghana. The girls, who were promised a better life but instead found themselves trapped in a nightmare, were saved thanks to a tip-off by NIDO, the umbrella body of Nigerians living in Ghana.

According to reports, the victims, including three siblings, endured physical abuse, molestation, and exploitation without any compensation. One of the rescued girls bravely shared, “They give us out to men, and they don’t give us money; they collect everything.” Their phones were confiscated, isolating them from their families and leaving them helpless.

Chairman of NIDO, Chief Callistus Elozieuwa, made a heartfelt plea for support to ensure the safe return of these girls to Nigeria. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, expressed deep concern over the situation, calling on the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons to take swift and decisive action. She described the girls’ ordeal as “very, very heartbreaking” and emphasized the need for urgent measures to combat human trafficking.

The suspect, a Nigerian man, has been apprehended and is currently in police custody. As efforts continue to bring the girls back home and provide them with the necessary care and assistance, it is a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against human trafficking and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals from such exploitation.
