A new law in Kano State, Nigeria, requires intending couples to undergo premarital medical screening before marriage. The law, signed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, aims to reduce the likelihood of children being born with underlying health issues like sickle cell anemia, HIV/AIDS, and hepatitis.

The law mandates testing for genotype, hepatitis B and C, HIV/AIDS, and other related conditions. No wedding will be permitted without a health screening certificate from a government-approved facility.

Stakeholders have expressed mixed feelings about the law. Some, like Dr. Abdurrahman Ahmad Tijjani, a medical practitioner, welcome it as a positive development. Others, like a renowned Islamic scholar, suggest a gradual implementation, starting with areas where diseases are more prevalent.

The Chief Imam of Shehu Usman Danfodio Jumat Mosque, Sheikh Isa Abba Umar Madabo, supports the law, citing Islam’s emphasis on protecting lives. Some parents and prospective grooms also support the law but suggest making the testing free or subsidized.

The law prohibits discrimination against individuals living with HIV/AIDS, sickle cell anemia, hepatitis, and related conditions. Violations may result in a fine of up to N500,000 or a minimum of five years imprisonment, or both.

The Kano State government aims to create a healthy environment and reduce health challenges through this initiative.
