Mia Love, the first Black woman to be elected to the U.S. Congress as a Republican, has passed away at the age of 49. Her family confirmed the news on Sunday, revealing that she died after a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer.

In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), the family expressed their profound gratitude for Love’s impact on their lives and shared that she passed peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones.

Love represented Utah’s 4th Congressional District from 2015 to 2019. Her pioneering role as a trailblazer for both African Americans and women in the Republican Party garnered admiration nationwide. Utah Governor Spencer Cox also paid tribute to Love, calling her “a true trailblazer and visionary leader,” acknowledging her significant contributions to both her state and the nation.

Mia Love’s legacy as a barrier-breaking political figure will be remembered for her steadfast commitment to public service and her relentless pursuit of equality and progress.
