The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has remained silent following allegations by a corps member, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, that she received threats after sharing a video criticizing the high cost of living in Nigeria.

Uguamaye, in a video posted on March 15, expressed frustration over rising inflation and economic hardship, stating that prices keep increasing, making it difficult to survive. She also took a swipe at President Bola Tinubu, calling him a “terrible president” and questioning his administration’s response to the economic crisis.

Following the video, she claimed the NYSC board warned her against making political statements online. However, efforts to get a response from the NYSC’s Director of Press and Publicity, Caroline Embu, were unsuccessful, as she did not answer multiple calls or respond to text and WhatsApp messages.

Public Outrage and Calls for Action

The situation has sparked reactions from prominent figures and organizations. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar praised Uguamaye’s courage, stating that she represents a new generation of outspoken Nigerians.

“Rather than being met with hostility, Raye deserves encouragement and support. She is a shining emblem of Nigerian youth, ready to shape a better future,” Atiku stated.

Amnesty International (AI) also condemned the alleged threats, affirming that Uguamaye was within her rights to express her frustration over Nigeria’s economic difficulties.

Similarly, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) called on President Tinubu to instruct the NYSC to halt any intimidation, harassment, or threats against the corps member.

“Criticism is not a crime. The NYSC must stop treating it as one,” SERAP posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The NYSC has yet to issue an official statement regarding the controversy.
