Hon. Rukayat Shittu, representing Owode/Onire constituency in the Kwara State House of Assembly in Nigeria has introduced two bills aimed at combating corruption and regulating religious activities in the state.
The proposed Unexplained Wealth Bill, 2025 seeks to empower authorities to investigate and prosecute individuals who accumulate wealth beyond their known legitimate income. The bill is designed to deter illicit enrichment and enhance financial accountability.
“This bill is about fairness and accountability,” Shittu said. “We cannot allow corruption to thrive unchecked. Those who cannot explain their wealth should be held accountable.”
Additionally, the Religious Preaching and Religious Entrepreneurship Regulation Bill, 2025 aims to prevent financial exploitation, incitement, and manipulation under the guise of religious activities. It seeks to regulate financial transactions within religious organizations while preserving freedom of worship.
“Religion is sacred, but it cannot be used as a shield for unethical practices,” Shittu stated. “This bill will protect people from exploitation while ensuring religious institutions operate transparently.”
The proposed laws have sparked mixed reactions, with supporters commending Shittu’s efforts to address long-standing issues, while critics argue that the bills may face resistance from powerful interests.
