The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has urged Kenyan authorities to launch a thorough investigation into the mysterious death of Nigerian content moderator, Ladi Olubunmi, who was found dead in her Nairobi apartment.

Olubunmi, who worked for Teleperformance, a social media contracting firm, was discovered days after her sudden disappearance from work. Reports indicate that her decomposing body was found three days after she allegedly passed away.

According to a Wednesday report by the Associated Press, some of her colleagues accused her employer of preventing her from traveling to Nigeria, despite multiple requests.

In a statement issued on Thursday by NiDCOM’s Media and Public Relations Unit, the commission’s chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, emphasized the need for stronger labor protections for Nigerians working abroad.

“Proper mobility of labor law in Nigeria would protect the rights and well-being of Nigerians employed abroad, ensuring proper documentation, monitoring, and support systems,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.

She extended condolences to Olubunmi’s family, friends, and colleagues while urging Kenyan authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

NiDCOM also confirmed that it is in contact with the Nigerian High Commission in Kenya to monitor the situation and provide support to the deceased’s family.

Dabiri-Erewa appealed to Nigerians in Kenya to remain calm as investigations unfold. She also advised job seekers to engage only with reputable organizations and stay informed about their rights and available support structures.

This incident is not the first of its kind. In July 2021, two Nigerians died under mysterious circumstances at a house party in Kenya—one reportedly falling from the seventh floor of an apartment complex, while the other collapsed in a kitchen before being pronounced dead.
