The autopsy report on 4-year-old Miguel Ovoke, a pupil at Brickhall School who tragically died on April 24, 2024, has confirmed that he choked on a piece of meat from his homemade lunch. The school’s management released this information on Friday, June 7, 2024.
The incident occurred during the school’s lunch break and quickly stirred controversy on social media. According to the school’s statement, Miguel began choking on meat included in his lunch of rice, stew, plantain, and assorted meat. “Emergency manoeuvres to clear his throat were unsuccessful, and he was rushed to the sick bay where our certified nurse continued emergency procedures to dislodge the meat, but to no avail,” the statement read.
Miguel was subsequently taken to Excel Specialist Hospital, where he was declared dead. The hospital’s medical report identified asphyxiation as the cause of death.
The autopsy, conducted at the National Hospital, Abuja, involved representatives from all interested parties, including Miguel’s family. The results confirmed that the choking incident was due to the meat in his lunch.
Following the release of the autopsy findings, the school reported that Miguel’s parents have accepted the incident as “an act of God.”
