President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, held a closed-door meeting with members of the Lagos State House of Assembly at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The meeting, attended by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda, follows a recent leadership crisis within the Assembly. Lawmakers arrived in two white buses, with Meranda among them, while Obasa arrived separately a few minutes later.

After the meeting, lawmakers were seen singing “On your mandate we shall stand” in support of Tinubu as he returned to his office. One of the attendees confirmed that “everything has been resolved,” though an official statement is yet to be released.

Background of the Leadership Crisis

The Lagos Assembly faced a leadership shake-up on January 13, 2025, when Obasa was removed as Speaker by over two-thirds of the 40-member House, citing alleged misconduct. His deputy, Meranda, was immediately elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first female to hold the position in the South-West state.

However, Obasa rejected his removal, stating that it occurred while he was out of the country. Despite his objections, 36 lawmakers remained loyal to Meranda, insisting her leadership was legitimate.

The impasse continued for weeks until March 3, when Obasa was re-elected Speaker following Meranda’s resignation. She then returned to her previous role as Deputy Speaker, earning praise from lawmakers for her leadership and commitment to party unity.
