Nigeria Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have refuted claims that five of their members support a potential Nasir El-Rufai/Peter Obi presidential ticket for the 2027 elections.
Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, made this clarification through a statement signed by the Forum’s Director-General, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, on Saturday.
The statement strongly denounced the reports, describing them as baseless and politically motivated. According to Mohammed, these speculations are being spread by detractors who are unsettled by the PDP governors’ efforts to challenge the ruling party’s leadership and provide better governance.
“It is incumbent on the PDP Governors’ Forum to openly denounce and in very strong terms, the unpleasant and provoking publications and rumours being peddled ad nauseam by negative forces,” the statement read.
The forum accused unnamed political actors of attempting to create division within the PDP by financing factions and spreading misinformation to weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
The statement reaffirmed the PDP governors’ commitment to party unity and democratic principles, emphasizing that they will fully support whoever emerges as the party’s presidential candidate in 2027.
“As a formidable party, all organs of the PDP are focused on reconciliation and progress to alleviate economic hardships and restore the trust of Nigerians,” the statement added.
This clarification comes amid growing political speculation about possible alliances for the 2027 elections. However, the PDP governors made it clear that they are not involved in any discussions regarding an El-Rufai/Obi ticket and remain committed to the party’s official decision-making processes.
