Award-winning Nigerian singer, Tiwatope Omolara Savage, popularly known as Tiwa Savage, has opened up about her decision not to sign upcoming artistes under her label, citing the challenges and responsibilities involved in managing them.

Speaking in a recent interview with Forbes Africa, the 45-year-old Afrobeats star explained that she does not feel equipped to mentor and oversee other artistes, preferring instead to support the music industry in other ways.

“Everyone always says to me, ‘When are you going to sign an artiste?’ I don’t think I have the gift to sign another artiste because artistes are stressful. I could just be sleeping, and then I will wake up and my artist is trending for something else,” she remarked.

Tiwa Savage, who started her career as a backup vocalist for renowned artistes like George Michael and Mary J. Blige, gained prominence after competing in the UK edition of The X Factor and graduating from Berklee College of Music. She returned to Nigeria in 2012 and signed with Mavin Records, where she contributed to the label’s compilation album Solar Plexus.

While she may not be signing artistes, Savage revealed her plans to establish a music school to help young talents hone their skills before joining record labels that can properly support their careers.

“But I do have the gift to help, which is why I am trying to do the music school, where you can go and later sign to a label that can actually help you,” she added.

Beyond her music career, Tiwa Savage has been actively involved in youth empowerment initiatives, breast cancer awareness campaigns, and fundraising efforts for educational projects in her hometown.
