Lagos-based furniture maker, Tobiloba Samuel Omoosumi, popularly known as Tobywood, has reportedly died by suicide, a year after he was abducted and later released.

Omoosumi was kidnapped on February 7, 2024, while on his way to Mushin to purchase materials for his work. He regained his freedom after a week in captivity. However, friends and family noted that his online presence significantly diminished following the incident, raising concerns about his well-being.

A friend, identified as Ella, described him as a cheerful and lively individual who was actively involved in church activities despite his past ordeal. However, she noted that he ended his life at a time when it seemed he was beginning to recover.

There are claims that the 25-year-old faced online bullying and was accused of fabricating his kidnapping story. He also reportedly struggled with financial difficulties. A message he sent to a client on February 11, 2025, highlighted his distress:

“Good evening, sir. Please, I’m really like this. I have been going through some financial crisis that made me in so much debt, and I’m really sorry for not responding, sir. Please just give me a little more time this week. By God’s grace, I will deliver everything I promised, sir, please.”

Shortly after, news of his passing surfaced.

In an official statement, the Omoosumi family expressed their grief and condemned the spread of misinformation regarding his death. They confirmed that he had been laid to rest and requested privacy as they mourn.

“We appreciate the outpouring of love, condolences, and support, but at this time, we implore everyone to honor our decision to mourn in peace,” the family stated.

His friend, Hassan Adesina, revealed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death were ongoing. However, the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the command had not yet been notified of the reported suicide.
