Mojisola Meranda has resigned as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, just seven weeks after assuming office. However, lawmakers re-elected her as Deputy Speaker on Monday, commending her leadership style and commitment to stability within the Assembly.

Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency I, stepped down following a reported high-level meeting with influential members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) aimed at resolving the leadership crisis that has plagued the Assembly. Lawmakers praised her decision, citing her humility and dedication to party regulations.

The crisis began on January 13, 2025, when the Assembly ousted then-Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, the representative of Agege Constituency I. More than two-thirds of the 40-member House voted for his removal over allegations of misconduct. Meranda, who was Deputy Speaker at the time, was swiftly elected as the first female Speaker in Lagos State history.

However, the situation remained tense, as Obasa rejected his removal, claiming the impeachment process was irregular and occurred in his absence while he was outside Nigeria. He also criticized the heavy security presence during the impeachment proceedings.

Despite strong opposition from 36 lawmakers loyal to Meranda, Obasa made a dramatic return to the Assembly on February 27, 2025, escorted by armed security personnel. He insisted that he was still the rightful Speaker, escalating tensions within the legislative body.

With Meranda’s resignation, the Assembly appears to be moving towards reconciliation, but the long-term impact of the crisis remains uncertain.
