The Lagos State Police Command has reinstated the security details of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, following their earlier withdrawal.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, confirmed this on Thursday during a press briefing at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja.
Podium News had earlier reported that security personnel attached to the Speaker’s office and residence were withdrawn on Thursday morning. However, Jimoh clarified that the withdrawal was part of an ongoing police audit of personnel and firearms, which is a routine exercise across police commands.
“Periodic audits of police personnel attached to eminent personalities and groups is a statutory procedure,” Jimoh stated. “This process ensures accountability, proper management of firearms, and ensures that officers remain on their designated duty posts.”
He further explained that the exercise was aimed at identifying officers deployed to unapproved locations and redeploying them to official police posts to strengthen security across Lagos.
With the state’s population exceeding 20 million and police personnel numbering less than 18,000, Jimoh emphasized the need to optimize security resources.
“The Special Protection Units at the Force Headquarters will now centrally manage VIP security assignments,” he said. “Individuals requiring police protection must seek approval from the Inspector-General of Police, and such requests will be treated based on merit.”
The personnel audit, Jimoh added, is not limited to Lagos but is being conducted nationwide.
This development comes amid the ongoing leadership crisis at the Lagos State House of Assembly, with former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa claiming that Meranda has resigned, a claim she has yet to confirm.
