The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has summoned MultiChoice Nigeria to explain its decision to increase subscription fees for DStv and GOtv, set to take effect on March 1, 2025.

In a notice sent to customers, MultiChoice announced that the DStv Premium bouquet would increase from ₦37,000 to ₦44,500, while the Compact+ package would rise from ₦25,000 to ₦30,000, among other adjustments.

Following public outcry over the hike, FCCPC directed MultiChoice Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer to appear before the commission for an investigative hearing at its headquarters on Thursday, February 27, 2025.

FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, stated that the commission was concerned about the recurrent unilateral price hikes and potential abuse of market dominance within the pay-TV industry.

“The FCCPC is deeply concerned about MultiChoice’s pricing strategies, especially amid allegations that the company applies different pricing models in other markets,” Ijagwu said.

The commission also warned that regulatory penalties, sanctions, or corrective measures could be imposed if MultiChoice fails to provide a satisfactory explanation or is found to have violated fair market principles.

As part of its consumer protection efforts, FCCPC has begun consultations with the sector regulator and other relevant agencies to ensure fair competition in Nigeria’s digital subscription landscape.
