South Africa’s power crisis deepened over the weekend as Eskom, the national power utility, implemented its highest level of controlled power cuts due to multiple unit failures at key power stations.

Eskom confirmed that it lost ten generation units overnight at its Majuba and Camden plants, prompting the enforcement of Stage 3 load shedding, which removed 3,000 megawatts from the national grid.

On Sunday, Eskom’s Group CEO, Dan Marokane, announced that six of the lost units had been restored, with an additional five to six expected to return to service later in the day, adding 3,200 megawatts to the grid.

“We anticipate getting out of this stage by the end of the week,” Marokane assured.

By early Monday, the power utility announced a slight improvement, reducing the outages to Stage 4 until further notice. As the crisis persists, South Africans continue to grapple with frequent power cuts, disrupting businesses and daily life.
