Former Head of State Yakubu Gowon has publicly expressed gratitude to ex-military president Ibrahim Babangida (IBB) for restoring his rank and honour.

Speaking at a book launch in Abuja on Thursday, February 20, 2025, Gowon reflected on the challenges he faced after being overthrown in 1975, including being charged with treason. However, he acknowledged that President Shehu Shagari later rescinded the charges, and Babangida played a key role in reinstating his military rank.

“I had a very rough time in government, I was even charged for treason,” Gowon said. “Later on, President Shagari rescinded that order, and you (IBB) in the end restored my rank and honour. You did quite a lot for the country.”

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, who described his relationship with IBB as a friendship spanning over 80 years.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan also commended Babangida for his contribution to Nigeria’s history, stating that the book launch would help document the nation’s past for future generations.
