The nation’s electricity grid suffered another collapse on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, leading to widespread power outages across multiple states.
The incident, which occurred moments before noon, was confirmed by the X handle dedicated to grid updates, @NationalGridNg.
“There was a ‘GRID DISTURBANCE’ before noon today. Parts of the country experienced outage. Further information shortly,” the post read.
Electricity distribution companies also confirmed the development. The Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) stated that the outage occurred at exactly 11:34 AM, affecting all its feeders. Similarly, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) reassured customers that restoration efforts were underway in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
This marks the first national grid collapse of 2025 after experiencing a line-tripping incident in January. In 2024, the grid collapsed 12 times, raising concerns about the country’s unstable power infrastructure.
Frustrated Nigerians took to social media to express their displeasure over the recurring issue. One user, @OyedemiBabs, wrote: “Two different reasons, abeg who to believe now? If not for solar, PMS expenses for don set in straight. @NationalGridNg, please be specific—shortly won’t fix what I need original light for.”
Another user, @holuwhartoby, questioned the terminology used by officials, stating, “Which one be grid disturbance again? E don collapse abi e neva collapse?”
As Nigerians grapple with yet another power disruption, experts continue to call for urgent reforms in the electricity sector to prevent further occurrences.
