Renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has filed a $5 million lawsuit against Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook, over an alleged violation of his privacy.
The lawsuit, filed before a Lagos High Court, accuses Meta of publishing a misleading video on its platform, falsely claiming that Falana has been battling prostatitis for 16 years. The video, posted under a page named AfriCare Health Centre, features Falana’s name, image, and a voiceover detailing a fabricated health condition.
Falana argues that the publication, which he describes as “false, misleading, and unfair,” has severely damaged his reputation and caused emotional distress. Citing Section 37 of the Nigerian Constitution and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, Falana insists that the publication constitutes an invasion of his privacy.
In addition to demanding the immediate removal of the video, Falana is seeking $5 million in damages, claiming that Meta’s failure to verify the content before publication was reckless and aimed at driving traffic to its platform.
