Following the impeachment of former Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over financial misappropriation and abuse of office, newly elected Speaker Mojisola Meranda has continued to consolidate her leadership, gaining the support of fellow lawmakers.
On January 13, 2025, 37 out of 40 members of the House voted to remove Obasa, electing Meranda in his place. The impeachment, however, sparked widespread political debate and criticism from various stakeholders.
The crisis was reportedly resolved after a phone call from President Bola Tinubu, who intervened to restore stability within the Lagos Assembly. Since then, the atmosphere in the House has remained calm, with lawmakers fully backing Meranda’s leadership.
During the February 6 plenary session, lawmakers praised President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for implementing economic policies aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians.
Despite rumors of an attempt to impeach Meranda, Assembly insiders insist that no such plan exists and that lawmakers remain united under her leadership.
“The Assembly is peaceful, and everyone is working. The lawmakers are happy. Nobody is causing any problems,” a source within the Assembly stated.
Additionally, Speaker Meranda and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu were seen at Lagos Television (LTV 8) on Friday morning, further reinforcing her authority.
The House has adjourned its sitting until Monday, February 10, 2025, at 11 AM.
