The 67th Grammy Awards will take center stage tomorrow at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, and Nigerian music fans are eagerly anticipating a night of global recognition for their homegrown stars. Six Nigerian artists—Burna Boy, Davido, Rema, Tems, Yemi Alade, and Asake—are among the contenders for some of the industry’s most coveted awards.
These superstars have been nominated in major categories, including Best African Music Performance, Best Global Music Album, and Best R&B Song. Leading the pack is Tems with three nominations, while Burna Boy makes history as the first African artist to receive Grammy nominations for six consecutive years.
Burna Boy, already a familiar face at the Grammys, is eyeing another victory. His track Higher from the album I Told Them is nominated for Best African Music Performance. To secure the win, he will have to outperform strong contenders like Yemi Alade (Tomorrow), Asake (MMS featuring Wizkid), Tems (Love Me Jeje), and Chris Brown’s Sensational featuring Davido and Lojay.
Tems, who previously won a Grammy for her contribution to Future’s Wait for U, is in the running for three awards this year. Her debut album Born in the Wild is nominated for Best Global Music Album, while her song Burning competes in the Best R&B Song category. With her growing influence in the global music scene, many believe she is poised for at least one major win.
For Yemi Alade, Rema, and Asake, this marks their first Grammy nomination, a significant milestone in their careers. Alade’s Tomorrow showcases her longevity and artistry, making her the first Nigerian female artist to hit 100 million YouTube views for a single video. Meanwhile, Rema’s nomination for Best Global Music Album with HEIS signals his rise as a global star. Asake, known for his energetic style, has elevated his international reputation with MMS, featuring Wizkid.
Angelique Kidjo and Other African Contenders
Beyond the Nigerian stars, legendary Beninese-French singer Angélique Kidjo is also in the mix. She is nominated for Best Global Music Performance for her collaboration with the Soweto Choir on Sunlight To My Soul. Ghanaian reggae and Afro-roots artist Rocky Dawuni is another contender for the prestigious prize.
This year’s Grammy Awards will also feature a star-studded lineup, with Beyoncé leading the nominations with 11 nods. She has made history as the most-nominated female artist in a single year. Other top contenders include Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, and Post Malone.
Comedian Trevor Noah will host the event for the fifth consecutive year while also serving as a producer. The ceremony will air on CBS and stream live on Paramount+, with an on-demand option available the next day.
With Nigerian artists dominating multiple categories, fans are hopeful for a historic night that further cements Afrobeat’s influence on the global stage.
