Former Minister of Transportation in Nigeria, Rotimi Amaechi, has revealed that poverty has been a key factor in his long-standing involvement in Nigerian politics since 1987.

Speaking at the National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria, Amaechi candidly admitted that many politicians remain in power for personal gain, stating that Nigerian politicians are in office “to steal, maim, and kill to remain in power.”

Amaechi, who played a pivotal role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), emphasized that power is never freely given, citing historical instances where politicians only relinquished control when faced with significant resistance.

“The only way Ibrahim Shekarau became governor was because people lined up and were ready to fight for it,” he said. “If you think Tinubu will hand over power to you, you are wasting your time.”

Reflecting on his political journey, Amaechi noted that despite his influence in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape, his career was largely driven by financial necessity.

“Unfortunately for me, poverty made me a part of the political system since I left university in 1987, and I’ve been part of the process till today,” he stated.

The former minister’s remarks have sparked reactions across the political spectrum, with some critics accusing him of inciting Nigerians against the current administration. However, his statements have also reignited debates on the nature of political power and governance in Nigeria.
