The United Kingdom has appointed Florence Eshalomi, a British-Nigerian politician, as its new Trade Envoy to Nigeria, making her the second Nigerian to hold the position.

Eshalomi, who currently represents Vauxhall and Camberwell Green in the UK Parliament, confirmed her appointment on X (formerly Twitter), expressing enthusiasm about strengthening trade ties between the two nations.

“It is an honour to have been appointed as the United Kingdom’s Trade Envoy to Nigeria,” she wrote. “I’m looking forward to building on my close ties with Nigeria to promote a strong and flourishing economic relationship between our two great nations.”

The appointment, announced by UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, is part of the UK’s broader strategy to attract foreign investment and expand trade opportunities.

“I’ve launched a new team of trade envoys who will use their experience, expertise, and knowledge to unlock new markets, attract investment into the UK, and ultimately drive economic growth,” Reynolds said.

Eshalomi, 44, holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Political and International Studies with Law from Middlesex University. With years of experience in public service, she is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing UK-Nigeria trade relations and exploring new economic opportunities between both countries.

Her appointment comes as the UK seeks to deepen its economic ties with Nigeria, one of its largest trading partners in Africa.
