The new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has taken over the speaker’s office at the assembly complex amid heightened security, following the controversial removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

Security was reinforced at the assembly on Monday as Meranda moved into the office, with fears of a potential confrontation between rival factions. Obasa, who was removed by 32 out of the 39 lawmakers two weeks ago, returned to Lagos over the weekend and was welcomed by supporters in Ikeja.

Despite his removal, Obasa insists he remains the legitimate speaker, stating that “until the right thing is done,” he retains his position. His potential attendance at Monday’s plenary session has fueled speculation of a political showdown.

Monday’s session marks the third plenary presided over by Meranda since Obasa’s ouster, with the former speaker absent from the previous two sittings. Security personnel were seen screening journalists and visitors at the assembly’s entrance, with at least three police vehicles stationed outside and additional security units inside the complex.

Meranda was welcomed by lawmakers who expressed solidarity, taking photographs and chanting “Madam Speaker” as she assumed her new role in the assembly. Authorities say the heightened security measures aim to prevent any disruption to legislative activities.
