Former presidential candidate in Nigeria and activist, Omoyele Sowore, has been granted bail after his interrogation by the Force Intelligence Department of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja. However, he has rejected any bail conditions that he deems as compromising his “innocence, dignity, and integrity.”
Sowore was invited by the police over allegations including resisting and obstructing public officers, disobedience to lawful orders, cyberstalking, and attempts to prevent arrests. He has, however, described the investigation as a politically motivated move following his public criticism of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun’s tenure extension.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Sowore alleged that the police aimed to detain him and transfer him to Lagos for what he termed a “kangaroo trial.” He further disclosed that the Deputy Inspector-General of the Force Intelligence Department, Dasuki Galandachi, had informed him of his bail offer pending further investigations.
“I have also advised the DIG that in accepting ‘bail,’ I will not agree to conditions that compromise my innocence, dignity, and integrity,” Sowore stated. “If such unreasonable conditions are imposed, I will choose to remain in detention until I am charged to court. Even then, I know that there is no crime defined or to be investigated. It is just the impunity that has become the hallmark of the police hierarchy.”
