The media team of the newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has strongly refuted reports suggesting that the monarch abandoned his traditional rites midway through the process.
Speaking with Saturday Vanguard, a key spokesperson, Bode Durojaiye, described the reports as misleading and deceptive, emphasizing that they do not align with the facts.
“The headline was crafted to mislead the public and misrepresent the revered Alaafin throne,” Durojaiye stated, adding that Oba Owoade has not yet commenced the traditional rites leading to his coronation, which is set for April 4, 2025.
“It is impossible for the Alaafin to abandon rites he has not even started. The report itself admits this fact,” he explained, pointing out that the Oyo State Government is fully aware of the Alaafin’s movements and supports his decisions.
He further clarified that once traditional rites begin, they cannot be interrupted. “Tradition dictates that these rites must be completed without deviation,” he reiterated.
Regarding Oba Owoade’s recent trip, Durojaiye stated that the monarch returned to Canada to fulfill professional obligations and ensure proper preparations before his coronation.
Urging the media to be more responsible in reporting on cultural matters, he said, “We must respect our heritage and traditions. Misrepresenting these elements only weakens our cultural identity.”
He called on the people of Oyo and beyond to rally behind the new Alaafin, saying, “Let us all support Oba Owoade in the significant responsibilities ahead. Our collective support is invaluable.”
