Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central, has returned to the Senate after a three-month suspension. He was welcomed back by his colleagues and journalists at the National Assembly premises.
Ningi’s suspension was lifted on May 28, following a recall process initiated by Deputy Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro. The senator had been suspended in March over allegations of N3.7 trillion budget padding.
During his suspension, Ningi’s conduct was scrutinized, and his recall was announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Ningi’s return comes two weeks before the end of his suspension period, which was initially set to terminate on June 12, 2024.
The senator’s allegations of budget padding had sparked controversy, with some lawmakers and the presidency criticizing his claims. However, Ningi maintained that only N25 trillion of the budget was tied to projects, while N3.7 trillion had no project tied to it.
Ningi’s return to the Senate marks a new chapter in his legislative career, and his contributions to the upper chamber are expected to continue. The development also highlights the importance of accountability and transparency in Nigeria’s political landscape.
