Nigerians in South Africa have taken to the streets to demand justice following the death of one of their compatriots, Jeremiah Offorbike Okoye, while in police custody in Limpopo Province on January 13, 2025.

The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA), the umbrella body representing Nigerians in the country, has called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Okoye’s sudden demise.

NICASA President, Frank Onyekwelu, in a statement, disclosed that Okoye, a 50-year-old native of Ezinifite, Nnewi, Anambra State, had been living in South Africa for 22 years before his tragic death.

“Investigations are ongoing to determine what led to his untimely passing. We implore the police authorities to follow the rule of law in discharging their duties,” Onyekwelu stated.

He added that the Nigerian High Commission and Consulate had been officially informed, and efforts were underway to ensure justice for the deceased.

NICASA also condemned police brutality and the recurring deaths of Nigerians in South Africa, urging law enforcement agencies to uphold human rights and end targeted violence against foreigners.

“The death of Nigerians in police custody has become a recurring issue that needs to be stopped. If left unchecked, it will become a dangerous pattern,” the statement added.

The association further called on Nigerians in South Africa to remain law-abiding, while urging authorities to act swiftly in addressing the concerns of the Nigerian community.
