The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reverse the recent 50% increase in telecom tariffs, warning that failure to comply would result in legal action.

In a statement released on Monday, January 20, 2025, SERAP condemned the tariff hike, calling it “unlawful” and a violation of citizens’ rights.

“The Tinubu administration and telecom operators must immediately reverse the unlawful increase in call and data costs. If not reversed within 48 hours, we’ll see them in court,” the group declared.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had earlier announced the tariff adjustment in a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Reuben Muoka. The NCC justified the increase, stating that the new tariffs—capped at a maximum of 50%—were necessary to address the rising cost of telecom operations and sustain service quality.

According to the commission, tariff rates have remained unchanged since 2013, despite mounting operational costs. The NCC assured Nigerians that the new adjustment aims to balance sustainability and affordability, ensuring continued investment in infrastructure, innovation, and improved network services.

However, the tariff hike has sparked outrage among consumers and rights groups, with SERAP leading the opposition. The organization insists that the increase places an additional financial burden on Nigerians, particularly amid economic hardship and rising living costs.

As the deadline looms, all eyes are on the Tinubu administration to see whether the government will heed SERAP’s demand or face legal action.
