Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King has reclaimed the top spot at the North American box office over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, earning an estimated $15.5 million. The animated prequel, which had briefly slipped from the lead, outperformed two new releases—Sony’s One of Them Days and Universal’s Wolf Man—which debuted in second and third place, respectively.

Comedy film One of Them Days, starring Keke Palmer and SZA as struggling roommates facing eviction, had a strong opening with $14 million. Industry analyst David A. Gross described it as “an excellent opening for an original Black American comedy,” attributing its success to positive reviews and strong audience reception.

Horror film Wolf Man, starring Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner, failed to meet expectations, grossing only $12 million over four days. As a remake of the 1941 horror classic, its underwhelming debut raised doubts about its potential as a new franchise.

Moana 2 secured fifth place with $8.4 million, pushing its global earnings past the $1 billion mark and making it Disney’s third 2024 blockbuster to reach the milestone after Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 landed in fourth place with $10.3 million.

Other films rounding out the top 10 included Den of Thieves 2: Pantera ($7.8 million), Nosferatu ($5.1 million), A Complete Unknown ($4.6 million), Wicked ($4.56 million), and Babygirl ($2.5 million).
