The Lagos State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Smiley Kids Montessori in Sangotedo following the tragic death of a two-year-old pupil, Rapheala Ogbodo, who drowned in the school’s swimming pool.
In a statement posted on its official X handle on Saturday, the government confirmed that the closure would remain in effect pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation by the Lagos State Safety Commission and the Office of Education Quality Assurance, Ministry of Education.
Officials from both agencies have visited the school to conduct a preliminary inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
The Director-General of the Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, emphasized the need for strict adherence to safety regulations in schools to prevent similar tragedies. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to holding educational institutions accountable for student safety.
“The Lagos State Government extends its deepest condolences to the family of the victim and remains committed to preventing future occurrences,” the statement read.
