The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Adewunmi Onanuga, has passed away at the age of 59 after a brief illness.

The tragic news was confirmed in a statement by House Spokesman, Akin Rotimi, on Wednesday evening. Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, was described as a “dedicated public servant and visionary leader.”

Born on December 2, 1965, Onanuga was first elected to the House in 2019 under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and served as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development during the 9th Assembly. In her second term, she was appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly, where she was praised for her exceptional leadership and commitment to legislative discipline.

Affectionately called “Ijaya” by her admirers, Onanuga earned a reputation for her intellect, humility, and passion for societal development. “Her impactful contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape reflected her dedication to improving the lives of her constituents and her drive for excellence,” the statement read.

The House of Representatives extended its condolences to Onanuga’s family, her constituents, and the people of Ogun State. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by her family in the coming days.
