Oyo town was alive with excitement on Monday, January 13, 2025, as residents warmly welcomed their new monarch, Oba Abimbola Owoade, following his presentation of the instruments of office by Governor Seyi Makinde. Oba Owoade, the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, takes over from the late Oba Lamidi Atanda Adeyemi, more than two years after his passing.
The atmosphere in the town was electric, as both locals and dignitaries gathered to celebrate this historic occasion. In preparation for the royal arrival, markets, including the iconic Akesan market, were closed in accordance with the customs of the Oyo people. Residents lined the streets, eager to catch a glimpse of their new ruler as he made his way to the palace and family home in Agure.
The Iyaloja of Oyo, Alhaja Adijat Bakare, spoke about the importance of the day, emphasizing that the suspension of trading activities was a cultural tradition to honor the new monarch. “This is a momentous occasion for us, and it is essential to honor our new Oba in line with our cultural practices,” she said.
The celebratory atmosphere was further amplified by traditional displays of attire, drumming, and dancing, as the streets were filled with the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people. Market women and residents expressed their joy, hoping that Oba Owoade’s reign would usher in peace and prosperity for Oyo town.
The celebrations are expected to continue throughout the week with various cultural events, reinforcing the community’s unity. Oba Owoade arrived in the town around 1:50 pm, driving in a black G-Wagon, and was greeted by notable sons and daughters of the town. Heavy security, including the Operation Burst, Police, Civil Defense, and Amotekun, ensured a safe environment during the festivities.
Following his arrival, Oba Owoade began the traditional 21-day seclusion rites, after which the official coronation as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo will take place. Baba Iyaji Oyo, High Chief Mukaila Afonja, expressed that any remaining discontent regarding the monarch’s selection should be put to rest, as the entire town had embraced Oba Owoade’s ascension. He also urged the new monarch to be a father to all and to forgive those who may have wronged him.
As the town rejoices, all eyes are on the new Alaafin, with high hopes for a prosperous reign for Oyo town and the Yoruba people.
