The Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage (TCNMW) has announced its 8th meeting to continue negotiations on the national minimum wage. Mr. Ekpo Nta, a member and the Secretary of the committee, made this announcement on Monday, June 3, 2024 in Abuja, Nigeria.

“I respectfully invite you to attend the 8th meeting of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage,” Nta said. “The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at Nicon Luxury Hotel, Area 11, Abuja at 10:00 a.m. prompt.”

Nta mentioned that the minutes of the 7th meeting, the draft agenda for the 8th meeting, and the Zoom link for virtual attendance will be forwarded in due course. He urged the chairman of the committee, members, and observers to take note.

The announcement comes amidst ongoing tension as organized labour has initiated an indefinite nationwide strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to meet their demands for a new minimum wage. The Federal Government has offered N60,000 as the new national minimum wage, while labour unions are demanding N470,000.

It is worth recalling that at the 7th TCNMW meeting, organized labour expressed disappointment over the absence of governors and key ministers, except for the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, who also acts as a conciliator. Labour representatives noted that no government officials with the authority to commit to any outcomes were present.

The meeting on June 4 is expected to be crucial in addressing the ongoing labour unrest and finding a resolution that balances the needs of workers with the government’s economic constraints.
