Rory Sykes, a former child star famed for his role in the 1990s British TV show Kiddy Kapers, tragically passed away at the age of 32 in the wildfires that ravaged Malibu, Los Angeles. Sykes, who had lived with cerebral palsy, died on Wednesday in his cottage located on his family’s 17-acre estate.
In a heartfelt social media post, his mother, Shelley Sykes, who also hosted Kiddy Kapers, shared the devastating news, stating, “It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of my beautiful son @Rorysykes to the Malibu fires yesterday. I’m totally heartbroken.”
Shelley recounted the harrowing events leading to her son’s death, describing her attempts to rescue him from the inferno. With a broken arm and Rory unable to walk due to his condition, she struggled to help him escape the flames. She recalled, “He said, ‘Mom, leave me.’ No mom can leave their kid.” After her desperate attempts to get help, which included rushing to a nearby firehouse when 911 was unreachable, Shelley returned with assistance, only to find that Rory had succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning.
Shelley expressed her immense pride in her son, noting that Rory had overcome numerous challenges, including surgeries to restore his sight and improve his mobility. Despite his struggles, Rory maintained a resilient spirit, inspiring many with his adventurous attitude and his foundation, Happy Charity, which he started at the age of eight to help those in need.
Described by his mother as a “wonderful son,” Rory is remembered for his courage and determination. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and fans worldwide.
