Former Inspector-General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro, has withdrawn from the race for President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo pending the resolution of a court case challenging his state of origin.

Okiro announced his decision after learning of an interim order from the Enugu State High Court restraining him from participating in the election. He noted that the court order, which claims he is not an indigene, contradicts verifiable evidence of his Rivers State heritage.

In a statement, Okiro said, “Although I have not been formally served, my commitment to the rule of law remains unwavering. I will not participate in the election until the case is resolved.”

Okiro emphasized his Rivers State roots, citing records such as his birth attestation from the National Population Commission, publications, and endorsements from his community. He noted that his traditional ruler, the Nzeobi of Egbema, has affirmed his indigene status.

The former IGP also referenced his involvement with the Rivers State Students’ Association during his time at the University of Ibadan and his role in the South-South People’s Assembly under Chief Edwin Clark.

Okiro revealed he has instructed his lawyers to pursue the matter to ensure justice. “The court will vindicate us by upholding the principles of natural justice and the rule of law,” he said.

The traditional ruler of the Mgbede community in Rivers State, Eze Everestus Ginikanwa Amuda, also affirmed Okiro’s roots, describing the allegations as baseless. The monarch added, “Okiro’s records as a Rivers indigene are indisputable, and he remains a valued member of our council.”

The Igbo Elders Council has endorsed Okiro for the role, citing his leadership experience and his ability to foster peace and economic stability.

In a statement, Nze Uchechukwu Enweremmadu of the council said, “Okiro is a unifying figure trusted beyond Igboland. He is the leader we need to build bridges and advance Igbo development in Nigeria.”

Despite the setback, Okiro urged his supporters to remain committed to the principles of democracy and the unity of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.
