John Mahama officially returned to the presidency on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, during a ceremony held at Independence Square in Accra, Ghana. The event, attended by several dignitaries, including Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marked Mahama’s second term in office after succeeding Nana Akufo-Addo.

During his inaugural speech, Mahama made a notable slip, mistakenly referring to Tinubu as the “honourable president of the Federal Republic of Ghana.” The gaffe sparked reactions across social media and among attendees.

Despite the slip, President Tinubu extended his support to Mahama and the people of Ghana. Speaking at the event, Tinubu emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between the two nations and expressed his optimism for Mahama’s leadership.

“Even when we disagree, we must choose the path of peaceful dialogue. Your new President is a man of patriotic vision and substance,” Tinubu said. “You can always count on Nigeria’s support at any given time you call on me. We will work together to bring prosperity to the people of our two nations.”

Tinubu also took the opportunity to challenge Africa’s critics, urging the continent’s leaders to focus on unity and progress. “The election of Mahama and other past Ghanaian presidents demonstrates that in West Africa, we are capable of democratic and productive endeavours,” he added.

Mahama’s victory in the December 2024 election saw him secure 56.3% of the vote, defeating Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who garnered 41.3%. Bawumia conceded defeat on December 8, marking the end of the New Patriotic Party’s two-term governance under Akufo-Addo.

In his inaugural address, Mahama pledged to strengthen ties with neighboring countries, including Nigeria, and work toward greater economic cooperation within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

“This moment is a source of pride and honor for Ghanaians and the entire African continent,” Mahama said. “We must forge partnerships that benefit our people and uplift our shared vision of progress.”

Mahama’s return to office comes amid significant challenges, including Ghana’s economic recovery and youth unemployment, issues he has vowed to address in his new term.
