The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed the deaths of two men following an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion at an Islamic school in Kuchibuyi Village, Bwari Area Council, Abuja.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the men, who had traveled from Katsina, visited the school’s owner, Mallam Adamu Ashimu, before the tragic incident.
According to police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh, the explosion occurred on the veranda of the Tsangagyar Sani Uthman Islamiyya School around 11 a.m. on January 6, 2025.
“The three visitors are suspected of bringing the explosive device with them. Tragically, two of the men died while tampering with the device, while the third man and a female trader sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving medical care under police guard,” Adeh stated.
The FCT Bomb Squad confirmed the explosion as an IED attack, recovering remnants of the device at the scene.
Upon receiving a distress call from the Sarki of Kuchibuyi, police operatives, including the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, swiftly cordoned off the area and evacuated victims to nearby hospitals.
Mallam Adamu Ashimu, the school’s owner, has been taken into custody for questioning. The police assured the public that further updates would be provided as investigations unfold.
In light of the incident, FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or objects.
