A suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated at an Islamiyyah school in the Kuchibiyu Community of Bwari Area Council, Abuja, on Monday, January 6, 2024, killing one student and injuring four others.

The explosion, which occurred around noon, sent shockwaves through the school and its surrounding community. According to reports, the deceased student was carrying the explosive device when it detonated.

Earlier in the day, the school had held a resumption assembly to welcome newly admitted students for the new term, which began on January 3, 2025.

Emergency responders, including a police bomb disposal unit, arrived promptly at the scene. The injured students were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Authorities are investigating how the student came into possession of the suspected explosive device and the circumstances that led to the tragic incident. The explosion has raised concerns about school safety and the dangers posed by minors handling explosive materials.

As of press time, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command has not released an official statement. Efforts to reach the command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, for comments have been unsuccessful.

Further updates will be provided as investigations unfold.
