The Nigerian military has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating the production and circulation of illegal arms while exploring ways to harness the skills of law-abiding citizens involved in local firearms and military-grade equipment production.
Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, made this known during an operational visit to frontline troops under Operation Safe Haven in Plateau State. This visit included an inspection of seized locally made arms and ammunition recovered within the operation areas.
Operational Inspections and Support
General Musa began his tour at the headquarters of the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, where he was welcomed by the General Officer Commanding and inspected the quarter guard. The CDS and his entourage then proceeded to the Sector 8 headquarters in Mangu, inspecting military hardware and operational equipment at the forward operation base.
The CDS commended the troops for their efforts in maintaining peace despite challenges and assured them of additional resources to enhance their capabilities. “Advanced weaponry, vehicles, and welfare improvements are on the way to further strengthen our operational efficiency,” he stated.
Focus on Local Firearms Production
While reviewing a cache of locally made arms seized from criminal elements, General Musa expressed interest in engaging skilled citizens involved in firearms manufacturing. He emphasized the possibility of integrating such expertise into the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) to support national defense efforts while ensuring the illegal production of arms is curtailed.
Renewed Offensive Against Criminality
General Musa charged troops to intensify operations by targeting criminal hideouts and eliminating threats across the country. He urged them to approach their duties with professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights.
“The fight against insurgency in 2025 requires renewed vigor and determination. We must remain resolute in protecting our nation,” he said.
Appreciation for Troops’ Efforts
The CDS acknowledged the dedication of the troops in maintaining security across the region, despite limited resources. He reiterated the military’s commitment to improving their welfare and operational conditions as they continue their efforts to secure the country.
